According to authorities with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a man died in Pharr on Saturday after he drove into a concrete fence south of the intersection of Rodriguez Avenue and Kennedy Street. The collision occurred at roughly 1:36 p.m.

The driver was traveling northbound on Rodriguez Avenue in a black Mazda 3 when the accident happened. Authorities report that the driver failed to brake at a stop sign before he drove into the concrete barrier.

The cause of the crash has not been reported at this time. An investigation into this event remains ongoing.

What Causes Car Collisions With Stationary Objects

In 2022, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports that there were roughly 110,000 car accidents in which the first harmful event was a collision with a stationary object, including parked cars. This represents nearly one out of every five car accidents, with one such accident happening about every 5 minutes of every day.

The TxDOT doesn’t record the causes of these Texas car accidents, but there are a few common causes of stationary-object crashes that we know about. Most of these causes have to do with driver error: driving while intoxicated, driving at unsafe speeds, driving while tired, driving while distracted, and driving unsafely in poor weather conditions are all top causes of stationary-object crashes.

However, there are also cases in which a collision with a stationary object can be caused by factors outside of the driver’s control. For instance, a driver might lose control of their vehicle and collide with a stationary object if they experience a vehicle malfunction, like a brake failure. Other dangerous drivers on the road can also cause us to make unsafe maneuvers in an attempt to avoid a crash, and these maneuvers can lead to collisions with stationary objects. The design of the road itself can also lead to object collisions, such as when there isn’t sufficient signage warning about an upcoming obstruction.

While there are several causes of stationary-object collisions that you can’t do anything to avoid, many can be prevented with more careful driving. Do your part to prevent these dangerous accidents by always driving with care. Don’t speed, focus on the road, and avoid driving in poor weather.
