The Deadly Edinburg Accident

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that a 16-year-old boy from Donna was killed on Farm-to-Market Road 1423 in Edinburg on October 20. The accident happened at around 8 p.m. on FM 1423 south of Anderson Road.

The teen was walking in the northbound lane of FM 1423 when he was hit by a white  Chevrolet Silverado traveling north. Following the initial collision, the teen was struck again by a black GMC Sierra traveling behind the Chevrolet, according to DPS.

DPS states that the teen was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident and that the road “was not well-lit.”

Both drivers stopped to render aid following the incident and will not be facing charges.

The DPS released a list of safety tips for pedestrians along with the news release on Friday’s accident. It included following road signs and rules of the road, using crosswalks or intersections for crossing, crossing in well-lit areas where crosswalks aren’t available, looking in all directions before crossing a street, walking on sidewalks when available, and walking facing traffic as far from traffic as possible when sidewalks aren’t available.

The DPS also recommended wearing bright or reflective clothing and avoiding wearing dark clothing while walking at night. The agency also said that you should stay sober while walking at night to protect your judgment and abilities.

Texas Pedestrian Accidents: What You Need To Know

You might not really think about it while driving, but the truth is that even seemingly minor auto-pedestrian accidents can be incredibly dangerous for the pedestrians involved. Cars are far larger, heavier, and more durable than the human body. It’s incredibly important that each of us takes time to respect that fact when we get behind the wheel.

In 2022, there were a total of 917 pedestrians killed in auto accidents in Texas. That’s one person killed roughly every nine and a half hours. When you consider the number of people seriously injured, the figure gets even higher: 1,710 people sustained suspected serious injuries in Texas pedestrian accidents in 2022. Out of all Texas pedestrian accidents in 2022, 11% resulted in a fatality. That’s about 16 times more deadly than the average car accident during the same period

When we can’t see or predict a pedestrian’s actions, sometimes there’s nothing we as drivers can do to prevent deadly accidents. Still, many pedestrian accidents are preventable. It’s important that you take time as a driver to watch out for pedestrians and keep their safety in mind.
