The Bad Weather Crash
In the afternoon on Wednesday, February 8, in Harris County, Texas, a driver in a Toyota Tacoma was traveling on the 500 block of Rankin Road in the rain. When attempting to change lanes, the driver of the Toyota lost control of the vehicle and spun into oncoming traffic.
A Honda crashed into the Toyota, and two other cars drove into the ditch to avoid the crash. After colliding, the Honda and Toyota became engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Toyota was stuck inside the vehicle and died at the scene. The Honda driver was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
Investigators state that traveling at an unsafe speed in the rain was a factor in the crash.
Deputies of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office are still trying to identify the driver of the Toyota.
9 Tips for Driving Safely in Poor Weather
When driving in bad weather conditions, taking extra precaution is essential. Sometimes it is hard to know how slippery the roads are or to see if visibility is low. Stay safe when driving in inclement weather with these nine tips.
- Give Yourself Time – Leave early if you need to be somewhere at a specific time. Giving yourself some extra time will help you stay patient on the road.
- Check Your Vehicle – Before leaving, look over your vehicle to make sure the lights and windshield wipers are clear of debris and working properly.
- Drive Slower – It’s okay to slow down when driving in poor weather conditions. Plan to go at least a third of the posted speed limit — for example, 45 MPH in a 70 MPH zone.
- Give Yourself Room – Driving in poor weather is not the time to be tailgating. Keep your distance to give yourself time to adjust to the road conditions and other drivers.
- Be Extra Cautious – When it’s raining, snowing, or foggy, it’s usually darker outside, which means you may miss seeing that red light, pedestrian, or dark-colored vehicle. Be alert and check your mirrors often.
- Drive With Both Hands – Sometimes, when we drive, we become so relaxed we’re not driving with both hands. Keeping your hands on the steering wheel helps you control your vehicle more.
- Wear Your Seatbelt – It’s a good idea to always wear your seatbelt, not only in poor weather conditions.
- Avoid Distractions – Keep distractions to a minimum. Avoid messing with the radio, eating, or using your cell phone while driving.
- Turn on Your Lights – It’s a good idea to always drive with your lights on, but it’s even more important in bad weather. Help other cars see you by keeping your headlights on.
If possible, stay home during bad weather to avoid any hazardous road conditions. When you can’t stay home, make sure to practice safe driving and take extra care when traveling in poor weather.
