Mother and Baby Killed and Toddler Injured After Highway Accident
A mother and baby are dead, and a toddler is injured after a crash on Wednesday, February 15, in Harris County, Texas.
The Three-Vehicle Accident
In Harris County, Texas, on Wednesday, February 15, at around 8:20 a.m., deputies of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident on SH-99 Grand Parkway.
According to investigators, a female driver of a 2009 Toyota Camry was exiting SH-99 when the driver of the car in front of her slammed on their brakes and almost completely stopped. The driver of the Camry swerved to avoid the vehicle, then swerved again to avoid the barrels dividing SH-99 and US 290. She then crashed into a 2020 Toyota 4Runner and a Volkswagen sedan.
When the Camry crashed into the 4Runner, the 4Runner rolled off the overpass, landed on its roof, and rolled again before landing upright. The driver of the 4Runner, a 30-year-old woman, was killed, and her 9-month-old and 3-year-old sons were taken to a nearby hospital. The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the toddler is in critical condition. Both children were in car seats.
The drivers of the Camry and Volkswagen sedan were uninjured in the accident.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office announced that the investigation of the three-vehicle accident is still ongoing.
Common Injuries Children Face in Car Accidents
Children should always be buckled into car seats that are designed for their height and weight. Manufacturers design, build, and test car seats to keep your children safe. However, it is still possible for children to be injured in car accidents.
- Head and Neck Injuries — With the sudden impact of an accident, children may suffer whiplash, a concussion, neck strain, a broken neck, or a traumatic brain injury.
- Spinal Injuries — A child can be severely injured if they are ejected from their car seat or the car during an accident, including spinal injuries. A spinal injury can cause partial or complete paralysis.
- Chest Injuries — Broken ribs, punctured or collapsed lungs, and internal bleeding are some typical chest injuries children can sustain from a car crash. These injuries often happen as a result of the impact, restraints tightening too much, not wearing their seatbelt, or children sitting in the wrong car seat for their size.
- Cuts and Bruises — Lacerations from broken glass are also regular injuries for everyone in car accidents, including children. Bruises can happen from restraints or loose objects flying around the car.
- Fractures — Children’s bones are especially vulnerable to fractures, which are common injuries from car crashes.
