Pedestrian Dead After Being Struck By Multiple Vehicles

A woman is dead after being hit by multiple vehicles on the Sam Rayburn Tollway. The accident happened on Saturday, March 4, in Carrollton, Texas.

The Tollway Crash

On Saturday, March 4, at around 10 p.m., emergency crews were called to the scene of an auto-pedestrian crash on the Sam Rayburn Tollway.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 30-year-old woman was walking along the northbound lanes of the tollway when a 2019 Nissan Titan hit her. She was then struck by multiple vehicles, although it is unclear how many. A spokesperson with the DPS stated that they considered each vehicle that hit her as a separate crash.

The 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan Titan did not sustain any injuries in the crash and remained at the scene to speak with authorities.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident and whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Safety Tips For Pedestrians and Motorists

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), 6,516 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2020. Unfortunately, this number has continued to increase over the years, making pedestrian safety a top priority for both drivers and pedestrians.

Because drivers and pedestrians share the road, it’s important that each group follows traffic laws and safety tips to protect each other from severe or fatal crashes:

For Pedestrians

  • Walk on sidewalks or clear pathways. If there aren’t any nearby, walk toward oncoming traffic and as far away from vehicles as possible.
  • Use crosswalks or intersections to cross streets.
  • Stay alert to traffic. Avoid any distractions, such as headphones or cellphones, as you may miss a car horn or traffic signal.
  • Never walk while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright or reflective clothing.

For Motorists

  • Watch for pedestrians in unexpected areas, especially at night and in poorly lit areas.
  • Always drive at or below the posted speed limit.
  • Yield or stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.
  • Don’t pass vehicles that are stopped at crosswalks; they may be stopping for pedestrians.
  • Stay alert in school zones and neighborhoods, as children may not pay attention before crossing in front of vehicles.

Whether you’re a pedestrian or motorist, you are responsible for keeping yourself and others safe on the road. As a pedestrian, don’t assume that drivers will automatically see you and yield to you. If you’re behind the wheel, make sure you’re always on the lookout for pedestrians and put all distractions away inside your vehicle. Following these safety tips may help prevent future pedestrian traffic fatalities in your area.
