1-Year-Old Dead, 3-Year-Old and Adult Critically Injured Following Rollover Crash
A 1-year-old is dead, and a 3-year-old and adult are in critical condition after being thrown from their SUV in a single-vehicle rollover crash. The crash occurred on Sunday, March 12, in Houston, Texas.
The Rollover Crash
At around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, Houston emergency crews responded to a crash in the 8400 block of the North Freeway.
According to the Houston Police Department, a black Honda Crossover carrying seven passengers was traveling south on the main lanes of the North Freeway. Reports show the Honda Crossover lost control, hit the center median, and rolled over multiple times.
Two children, ages 1 and 3, and an adult, were ejected from the vehicle. All three victims were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The 1-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the 3-year-old and adult are in critical condition.
Authorities transported two other children to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Police stated that three adults and four children were inside the vehicle during the crash. None of the children were wearing restraints, and a car seat was found in the vehicle’s trunk.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
The Importance of Seatbelts
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seatbelts saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017. However, in 2022, studies showed that the national seatbelt use rate was 91.6%. While this number may seem high enough, there are still roughly 8.4% of drivers who are not wearing their seatbelts.
It may seem useless and annoying to some, but seatbelts are the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of a crash. To fully understand the importance of seatbelts, there are multiple ways they can keep you safe during a collision:
- Holds you in place so that you can take better control of your vehicle
- Prevents you from ejecting outside the vehicle
- Distributes the force of impact to prevent one body part from taking the entire trauma
- Keeps you moving at the same speed as your vehicle so that you don’t fly forward and hit the steering wheel or dashboard
- Protects your head and spine from possible injury
A car crash can result in severe vehicle damage and injury to yourself and the others involved. Although you can’t entirely prevent a car accident injury from occurring, a seatbelt can lessen the likelihood of injury or even death. Putting on your seatbelt only takes a few seconds and can make the difference between life and death in a crash. Take the necessary step to protect yourself and your loved ones by making sure that everyone in your vehicle buckles up.
