The First Fatal Accident, Single-Vehicle
The first of the three fatal accidents occurred north of Palmview at roughly 5:45 a.m. on Sunday morning. The accident involved a single vehicle and resulted in the death of the 22-year-old male driver. Authorities have since concluded in preliminary investigations that intoxication played a role in the accident.
The driver was traveling on Farm-to-Market (FM) 2221 to the east of Bensten Palm Road in a white Acura TL when the crash happened. The driver lost control of his vehicle before going airborne. The vehicle then veered into a ditch and rolled several times. Authorities report that the driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was partially ejected from the vehicle.
The Second Fatal Accident, Auto-Pedestrian
The second accident happened at around 11 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, east of Edinburg on Tower Road to the north of South Trail Drive. A bicyclist was killed in the collision, and the driver involved has since been arrested for failing to stop and render aid.
The 19-year-old driver was traveling in a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe on Tower Road when he collided with a man on a bicycle. The Chevrolet was identified when it was found with damage consistent with the accident. The vehicle was found at the intersection of Texas Road and Alamo Road. The driver of the vehicle was located by DPS troopers near his residence in Edinburg.
The driver was charged with intoxication manslaughter, has been booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center, and was awaiting bond as of Monday morning.
The release of the identity of the deceased is pending the notification of his next of kin.
The Third Fatal Accident, Auto-Pedestrian
The third fatal accident happened roughly nine and a half hours after the second accident, just before 8:36 a.m. on Monday morning. The collision involved a semi-truck with no trailer attached and a 55-year-old man who has not yet been identified.
The truck was traveling southbound on 10th Avenue in front of the Hidalgo County Courthouse when it collided with the 55-year-old pedestrian. Police responded to the scene at West Cano Street and 10th Avenue. Authorities report that it’s currently unclear whether or not the pedestrian crossed within a designated crosswalk.
The driver involved remained on the scene to render aid, and the release from authorities stated that no alcohol was involved in the incident. Authorities also noted that bystanders stopped to offer aid to the victim while they awaited emergency medical services. The man later died from his injuries in a nearby hospital.
The investigation into this event remained ongoing as of Monday.
