The Dangers of Texas Speeding Car Accidents
According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there were a total of 162,214 speed-involved car accidents in Texas in 2022. That means speeding accounts for 30% of car accidents in the state. In comparison, alcohol-related accidents account for just 4% of all accidents in the state. This goes to show just how serious of an issue speeding is for drivers in Texas.
In addition to being a top cause of car accidents, speeding can also make car accidents more dangerous.
0.8% of speeding car accidents result in a fatality. While that is a small percentage, it’s still higher than the rate of fatalities in Texas car accidents in general. Speeding car accidents are about 15% more likely to result in a fatality compared to other types of accidents.
In speeding accidents that do result in a fatality, the individual most likely to be killed in the crash is the driver themselves. According to TxDOT, 48% of those killed in speed-related accidents in Texas in 2022 were speeding drivers. The following group of those most at risk are those traveling in other vehicles traveling at safe speeds; 30% of those killed in speeding accidents were passengers and drivers in other vehicles. This means that drivers who choose to speed are not only seriously putting themselves at risk, but others on the road as well.
All of this goes to show just how important it is not to speed while driving in Texas. If there’s somewhere you need to be at a specific time, plan ahead to make sure you have enough time to get there. Speeding is never worth your life.
