The Deadly Car Accident

According to authorities with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), officers responded to a two-vehicle crash north of Palmview on Sunday. The crash resulted in serious injuries to one passenger and the death of another.

At just before 6 a.m., a gray Dodge Durango with a single occupant was traveling southbound on La Homa Road north of Farm-to-Market (FM) 676. At the same time, a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu with two occupants was also traveling southbound on La Homa.

The 24-year-old male driver of the Malibu failed to control the speed of his vehicle, causing him to rear-end the Durango. As a result, the Malibu driver lost control of his vehicle, veering off the road and striking a light pole.

The driver of the Malibu died of his injuries on the scene while the passenger was taken to a nearby hospital with major injuries. The female driver of the Durango was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation into this collision by DPS troopers remains ongoing.

Texas Car Accidents: Important Numbers for You to Know

Car accidents are the leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States. Thankfully, Texas isn’t high on the list of the most dangerous states for drivers when population sizes are taken into account, but accidents still represent a significant threat to Texans. In fact, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), one person was killed roughly every two hours in the state in 2022 with an average of one reportable crash occurring every minute of every day.

Thankfully, most car Texas accidents aren’t deadly. In 2022, just under 4,500 people were killed in Texas car accidents. That’s just 0.3% of all people involved in car accidents. This means that roughly 3 out of every thousand people involved in car accidents are killed in Texas.

In more good news, Texas actually saw a decrease in fatal car accidents in 2022. The number of fatalities per hundred million miles traveled fell by nearly 2% and the total number of deaths fell by about .4%. While these percentages are relatively small, any reduction in the number of deaths seen on Texas roadways represents a major reduction in harm for some Texans.

Unfortunately, some types of accidents have increased in frequency in Texas. In 2022, nearly 100 people were killed in car-bicycle accidents in Texas, an increase of 1.11% from the previous year, and more than 800 pedestrians were also killed, a .24% increase over the year before.

The number of distracted driving crashes is a particular problem in Texas. In 2022, nearly 500 people were killed in distracted driving crashes, an increase of 11% over the year prior.
