August 13 Accident
One man was killed and two people were left injured following a speed-related accident north of Palmview on Sunday, August 13. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), officers responded to a two-vehicle accident on La Homa Road at around 6 a.m.
Prior to the collision, a white 2014 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound on La Homa. The 24-year-old driver of the Chevrolet failed to control the vehicle’s speed and rear-ended a gray 2012 Dodge Durango also traveling south on La Homa. The driver of the Chevrolet then veered off the roadway and struck a light pole.
The driver of the Chevrolet died at the scene while their passenger suffered major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the Dodge suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a hospital.
An investigation into the crash by DPS remains ongoing.
August 15 Accident
Another high-speed-related accident occurred in the RGV on Tuesday, August 15. Officers with the Mission Police Department say they responded to a major accident before 8 a.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Shary Road and Griffin Park.
A total of four vehicles were involved in the crash, including at least one black SUV, a white SUV, and a silver pickup truck.
The collision started when a speeding vehicle struck another vehicle at the intersection, starting a chain reaction crash. It has not been reported which vehicle caused the incident.
Three people, including a minor, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Speeding Car Accidents in Texas
Speed-related accidents are a major problem in Texas, but high-speed accidents make up a relatively small portion. In 2022, a total of nearly 140,000 crashes were caused by speeding or failure to control speed. This includes things like failing to reduce your speed in response to traffic changes. In total, roughly 2,600 Texas car accidents were caused by drivers traveling over the speed limit in 2022. That represents just half of one percent of all Texas accidents in that time.
Still, high-speed accidents have the potential to be incredibly dangerous. Nearly 12% of all Texas excess-speed accidents resulted in at least one death in 2022. In comparison, less than 1% of all Texas accidents cause a fatality. This means you’re more than 12 times as likely to be killed in a speeding accident compared to other accidents.
In fact, speeding accidents are, on average, six times more deadly than accidents involving semi-trucks.
