Brownsville Crash Results in One Death and One Arrest After Car Strikes a Tree While Drifting

A car crash that took place at around 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 15th, resulted in a man’s death.

According to the public information officer for the Brownsville Police Department, the driver of a Nissan 350Z had been performing drifts on the roadway when the driver of a Dodge Charger attempted to pass but was struck close to the intersection of Honeydale and Lewis Street.

After striking the Charger, the Nissan ended up hitting a tree, resulting in the death of the driver at the scene of the accident. A passenger in the Nissan was partially ejected from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Charger was also taken to the hospital for injuries but was released and taken into custody. A 6-pack of Jack Daniels mixed drinks was found in the Charger with four missing from the package, according to officers. The individual was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault.

The Dangers of Drifting on Public Roads

Drifting is illegal in pretty much every state, including Texas. Even drifting or street racing in private or abandoned parking lots is frowned upon. This is because, like all high-performance driving, it is very easy to lose control and crash.

Other cars and drivers are at risk whenever an individual decides to participate in dangerous driving behaviors on a public road. Combined with common hazards, like distracted or drunk drivers, and you have a recipe for disaster.

That doesn’t mean you should take an empty rural road as a chance to try your hand at drifting. Even rural roads and parking lots have objects that can lead to dangerous accidents.

Drivers interested in drifting should consider utilizing a professional track as they are designed for high-performance driving.

Even though few places specifically address drifting in their laws, the behavior still falls under dangerous driving. Drivers caught participating in this type of aggressive driving can face charges of speeding or street racing.

Much like driving under the influence, serious injuries or deaths will make the penalties more severe.
