Facts About Child Car Accident Injuries and Fatalities
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), a reportable crash happens roughly once per minute in Texas. Unfortunately, many of those accidents will involve children. In 2022, there were a total of 120 children under the age of 13 killed in Texas car accidents, not including pedestrians. This age group represents about 3% of all car accident fatalities.
While 3% might seem like a low percentage, it’s important to note how dangerous car accidents are for children across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, car accidents were the leading cause of child and adolescent deaths until 2019 when it was surpassed by firearm deaths. Even still, car accidents account for the second most amount of deaths of children and adolescents in the U.S.
Another important factor influencing the number of child and adolescent deaths is the use of safety belts. Of the 711 children who lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes in the United States, 36% were not buckled up.
Among adults, safety belt usage has been shown to reduce the likelihood of fatality by as much as 60%. Child restraints have also been shown to greatly reduce the likelihood of death in case of a car accident.
Whether you’re driving with a child or merely sharing the road with vehicles with child passengers, you can do your part to reduce the likelihood of child-involved car accidents by taking care when driving on the road. By bringing down the number of car accidents in general, you can reduce the likelihood that a child will be involved in a crash.
If your child has been involved in a Texas car accident, a McAllen auto accident injury lawyer can help you fight for your rights to compensation.
