How To Stay Safe After an Accident
After you have been involved in a single car accident, the thought of being involved in another one immediately after is probably the furthest thing on your mind. However, inattentive drivers are everywhere and the shock of the accident may cause you to take unexpected actions you might not have otherwise.
After an accident, there are steps you should take to stay safe while handling the situation.
Move Out of Traffic
If you can move your car, get it over to the side of the road out of the flow of normal traffic. If you can’t do this, you’ll need to stay in your car while you call for emergency services. Your car can still protect you if you are hit again.
If you’re on a highway or other area without a shoulder, signal to other drivers with your hazards. If possible, take your vehicle to a location where you can safely pull over to exchange information with the other driver and wait safely for help.
Call For Help
You should call for emergency services and the police after an accident. A police report can be important evidence when you make an insurance claim or file a personal injury lawsuit.
Calling emergency services will also help if the other driver flees the scene without giving you their information.
Protect Yourself
If possible, set up road signs or flares to let oncoming drivers know that your car is there. Stand on the side of the road away from your vehicle while you exchange information with the other driver.
You should try to stand away from the front of the vehicles. If you are to the side, you are less likely to be struck if one of the vehicles is hit by another driver.
