Early Morning Auto-Pedestrian Collision Leaves Elderly Man Dead
An accident on the morning of Tuesday, June 13th, left an 81-year-old man dead in Brownsville. At 6:14 a.m. a white truck made a turn from Palm Boulevard onto Jefferson Street, striking the victim while they were crossing the intersection.
The elderly man was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries after arrival. The driver stayed at the scene and investigators have ruled out that intoxication played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
The Dangers of Intersections
Intersections can be a major hazard for pedestrians. With little protection, it’s extremely easy for pedestrians to become victims of serious car accidents. Larger vehicles like trucks and vans are even more dangerous since they strike the body higher up.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2021, there were approximately 60,577 pedestrians injured in car accidents. In that same year, 7,388 pedestrians were killed, making it the most dangerous year since 1981. Intersection collisions accounted for 16% of all pedestrian traffic deaths.
Safety Tips for Pedestrians
- Always check left, right, and then left again before entering an intersection
- Keep your eyes on the intersection while you cross
- Make sure drivers acknowledge you before you cross at unsignaled intersections
- Avoid walking when visibility is poor, such as at night, dawn, dusk, or during a storm
- Wear bright, reflective clothing so you are easier to see
- Keep your senses on alert, don’t play music or look at your phone
