Intoxicated Man Crashes Into Seven Cars on San Antonio’s West Side

A man was charged with driving while intoxicated at around 5 p.m. on April 9th after hitting seven cars and a light pole.

The 35-year-old man was driving erratically on IH-10 and Probandt Street when he reportedly hit seven cars along the road with his Toyota Tundra before striking an electric pole on S. General McMullen, which knocked out power for the block.

The San Antonio Police Department said the man was detained at the scene and was determined to be intoxicated. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and five counts of failure to stop and give information after a crash.

No injuries were reported.

Drunk Driving in Texas: Understanding the Numbers

If you pay attention to the news, you may notice how often there are crashes involving drunk drivers or those under the influence of other illicit substances. Unfortunately, driving while intoxicated is very common in Texas.

In fact, Texas is one of the top five states with the most drunk driving incidents every year. Additionally:

  • Alcohol was involved in 25,261 crashes in Texas in 2021.
  • These crashes caused serious injuries to 2,522 people while 1,029 people were killed.
  • One person died every 8.5 hours that year.
  • Almost a quarter of all traffic deaths were linked to drunk driving.

Texas DUI Laws

Texas does have strict laws to try to discourage drunk driving in the state with penalties that include:

  • A first offense can result in up to 180 days in jail, up to $2,000 in fines, and the loss of your license for up to a year.
  • The second offense can include a $4,000 fine, a 1-12 month jail sentence, and the loss of your license for up to two years.
  • The third offense can bring a $10,000 fine, 2-10 years in jail, and the loss of your license for two years.

The State of Texas can also charge you with additional fines when you’re sentenced, which can range between $3,000-$6,000. Depending on the circumstances of the case, individuals may also face charges of child endangerment, a longer jail sentence, and a longer license revocation period if someone under the age of 15 was in the car.
