The Danger of Rollover Crashes
According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), there were more than 7,600 people killed in rollovers in the U.S. in 2021, accounting for nearly a third of all car accident deaths despite making up just 3% of accidents.
The most dangerous type of rollover accident are those caused by a frontal collision with another car or obstacle, but single-vehicle rollovers are by far the most common, accounting for three out of four rollovers.
Seat belts also play a major role in the danger posed by rollover crashes. The National Highway Safety Administration reports that “a very high percentage” of deaths in rollovers involved victims who were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. This is in part because failing to wear a seat belt can significantly increase your likelihood of being ejected during an accident. Ejections are one of the most deadly kinds of accidents.
Rollover accidents are usually caused by one of a few factors: running into a curb or other road hazard, turning too quickly, and unbalanced truck cargo. Rollovers are also more common in certain types of vehicles, specifically trucks and SUVs, though these vehicles may also provide greater protection in case of a crash.
You can reduce your risk of being involved in a rollover accident by always driving with care and never speeding. Use caution when driving in bad weather, and avoid driving in a hurry. Getting to your destination a few minutes early isn’t worth the risk to your life that speeding represents.
