Mother Killed in Weekend Crash
A woman was killed in a crash on the night of March 12 in Edinburg.
The mother was riding as a passenger with her 20-year-old daughter when the wreck happened. The pair were near the 4900 block of South 25th Avenue at around 11:15 p.m. when the single-vehicle incident took place.
Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing their seat belts and both were ejected from the vehicle during the collision. The mother was declared dead at the scene while the daughter was hospitalized and is currently in stable condition.
Police have not disclosed what caused the crash or whether the daughter will be charged with her mother’s death.
The Importance of Seat Belts
As this sad situation reveals, seatbelts are essential to your safety in the event of an accident. Approximately 51% of passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in car crashes weren’t wearing their seatbelts.
Here are the risks if you or a passenger choose not to buckle up:
- Without restraints, you risk being completely ejected from the vehicle. This is deadly in the vast majority of cases.
- Airbags can injure or kill you without restraints.
- Wearing your seatbelt improperly can cause injury to your abdomen or neck. If it sits on your neck or above your lap the pressure can cause internal injuries.
Here’s How To Buckle up Safely
Buckling up the right way can protect you and your passengers in the event of a collision. Be sure you check that the seatbelts fit properly or make adjustments as necessary.
Follow these steps before every ride:
- The shoulder belt needs to be across the middle of your chest. Get an adjuster if it hits your neck.
- The lap belt needs to rest across your hips or lap.
- Never put the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back.
- Secure your seat belts across the bony parts of your torso. Your ribcage and pelvis can take crash forces better than your neck or organs.
If you’re pregnant, make sure the belt never goes over your belly and your belly is as far away from the steering wheel as possible.
When riding with young children, make sure to practice the following guidelines:
- Young children should be rear-facing for as long as possible.
- Make sure belts are snug and resting against their ribs.
- Use a child or booster seat until your child is old enough for the seat belt to sit properly on their chest and hips.
- Make sure you install car seats properly. It needs to stay put when you tug on it.
- Replace car seats after an accident, even if they look fine to you.
