The October School Bus Accident
On Tuesday, October 3, another school bus was involved in an accident in Harlingen. An IDEA school district school bus carrying 32 students was struck at the intersection of Ed Carey Drive and Glasscock Avenue at around 4 p.m. The accident also involved a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) patrol unit and a Mustang.
It’s unclear which direction each vehicle was traveling prior to the crash, but the school bus was stationary at the intersection when the collision happened. The Mustang made a lane change and collided with the patrol unit which struck the bus as a result. The force of the crash pushed the bus over the curb and into a tree.
Five students from the bus and the bus driver were taken to local hospitals for evaluations, but no injuries were reported in connection with this accident. Parents of IDEA students were instructed to pick up their children from the scene.
How Common Are School Bus Accidents in Texas?
School bus accidents aren’t as rare as one might think. In fact, in 2022, one reported school bus accident happened roughly every six hours in the state of Texas. That’s a total of 1,431 school bus accidents for the year. Thankfully, the majority of those accidents caused no injuries at all: 79% of 2022 school bus accidents were reported as non-injury.
Of those school bus accidents that did cause an injury, most would have affected drivers and passengers in other vehicles, not the passengers on board the school bus. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), 70% of school bus-related accident deaths were of non-school bus occupants, with another 16% being pedestrians. While only one person was killed in Texas school bus accidents in 2022, it’s likely that similar figures could be found regarding who is injured in school bus accidents.
