Pedestrian Killed by Car While Crossing the Street in Brownsville

A man crossing Boca Chica Street on the night of Sunday, June 4th, was killed after being hit by a car. The accident happened at around 9:30 p.m. when a Ford Edge traveling eastbound attempted to stop but was unable to due to wet road conditions. 

The victim, a 24-year-old, was struck by the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. 

The Dangers of Wet Roads

Anything that interferes with a tire’s grip on the road can be a hazard to the driver and anyone around them. Tires rely on friction with the road to stop, and if the road is wet, icy, or slippery, the risk of an accident is much higher. 

Worn down tread can also make even normal road conditions more hazardous.

• Be careful of slipping since a fall can easily put you in the path of a driver who may not see you
• Avoid traveling when visibility is poor, like at night or during storms
• Wear bright clothing or a reflective vest so drivers can see you from further away
• Pay attention to your surroundings at all times

For Drivers

• Make sure your tires and brakes are in good working order
• Drive slower when the roads are slippery
• Watch out for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles so you can slow down early if a crash is likely
• Keep your lights on if it is dark or a storm is making visibility lower
• Try to stay home if you can
• Consider taking a driving course so you know what to do if you lose control of the vehicle
