Pedestrian and Driver Safety Rules

Pedestrian accidents are especially deadly. This is because the human body just isn’t able to withstand the forces applied when it’s struck by a moving vehicle. In comparison, victims of other types of car accidents have the protection of their vehicles around them. Because of this increased danger, Texas pedestrian accidents are actually more than 11 times deadlier than the average Texas car accident. That shows just how important it is to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents in Texas.

Some pedestrian accidents are unavoidable, but many can be prevented. To keep yourself safe and prevent these sorts of serious accidents, you should take care when driving or walking near the road. You can follow the tips below from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to do your part to reduce the number of serious pedestrian crashes seen in Texas.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

  • Cross the street at crosswalks and intersections
  • Cross in well-lit areas with clear visibility when no crosswalk or intersection is available
  • Look all ways before crossing the street
  • Walk on sidewalks when available
  • Walk facing as far from traffic as possible when no sidewalk is available
  • Watch for vehicles leaving and entering driveways and parking lots
  • Avoid using alcohol or drugs when walking near the road

Driver Safety Tips

  • Never drive under the influence
  • Watch for pedestrians at all times
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Never pass vehicles at crosswalks
  • Use extra caution when visibility is poor
  • Follow traffic laws and speed limits
