The Deadly Hit-and-Run
Just before 2:30 in the morning on July 8, a truck driver was killed after his vehicle fell from IH-37 near Steves Avenue in San Antonio. Initially, authorities reported that the driver had lost control before swerving into a light pole and subsequently leaving the highway. The 61-year-old pickup truck driver died from blunt trauma during the crash.
Later, authorities received reports and screenshots from a witness claiming to have information about the cause of the crash. The witness claimed to be friends with someone who had admitted to being involved in the incident.
Authorities identified the 31-year-old suspect and located him at his home. In the home’s driveway, authorities found a Pontiac G6 with heavy front right damage consistent with the early morning crash.
During questioning, the suspect stated that the damage to his vehicle was caused by a collision with a wall a few days before. He later said the incident had happened the day prior. The suspect agreed to have his vehicle photographed and gave a voluntary statement to authorities.
Blue paint chips matching the pickup truck were found on the G6, and the suspect subsequently admitted to making false statements and confessed to being involved in the deadly hit-and-run.
According to the suspect, he had been drinking earlier in the evening but stopped to ensure he’d be able to drive later. He claimed he was driving behind the pickup when the accident occurred. The pickup truck allegedly stopped suddenly, preventing the suspect from being able to stop his vehicle before colliding with the truck.
The suspect’s G6 has been taken as evidence, and paint chips and debris matching the vehicle were found at the scene.
The suspect admitted that he didn’t stop to render aid or call the police for help, saying he panicked. The suspect has been booked for failure to stop and render aid.
How Are Hit-and-Run Accidents Solved?
The truth is, the percentage of hit-and-run drivers who face justice is simply too low. Reports vary widely, but it’s estimated that somewhere between 80% to 90% of cases are never solved. If you’ve been involved in a hit-and-run, there are a few things you can do to make a conviction more likely:
- Call the police
- Move to a safe place
- Take note of any details about the vehicle you can
- Take photos of the scene
- Look for witnesses
If you were injured in a hit-and-run crash, you may need to ask someone else on the scene to help you with the steps above. Remember: your safety and your health comes first.
