Tesla Driver Flees After Killing a Pedestrian and Crashing Into a Building

The San Antonio Police Department is searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run. The accident occurred on the South Side on Saturday, March 25th, near Probandt Street and South Alamo Street.

The driver of the Tesla was turning a curve at around 1:25 a.m. when they went over a concrete island and struck a man on the sidewalk. The Tesla continued traveling before crashing into a building. The driver then fled on foot.

Emergency services declared the victim dead on the scene. The driver will be charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid-Death once they have been located.

Texas Hit-and-Run Facts

Under Texas law, individuals involved in an accident are required to help anyone involved in the crash; drivers are required to exchange information at a minimum if the accident is not that serious.

However, when someone is injured or killed, the parties involved must call for emergency services and stay on the scene until help arrives. Individuals who flee the scene face severe legal punishments when found.

A driver who flees after a crash can face a number of charges, including:

  • Failure to render aid after a crash that caused a minor injury can land a driver up to five years in prison, a year of confinement in the county jail, and up to $5,000 in fines.
  • Serious bodily injuries are considered a third-degree felony with a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
  • Fatal hit-and-runs are a second-degree felony in Texas. A driver changed with this will face 2-20 years in prison and a fine that can reach $10,000. This puts it on par with manslaughter while intoxicated.

What Should You Do After a Car Accident?

If you were involved in a crash, you should never leave the scene. The punishment if you stay tends to be less than what you may face for a Failure to Render Aid charge.

Here’s what to do if you are in an accident:

  1. Stop as close to the accident scene as possible.
  2. Check on other individuals involved in the accident.
  3. Call for an ambulance or transport any injured victims to get help.
  4. Call the police to report the accident.
  5. Exchange any insurance information with the other driver.
