The Edinburg Accident
Edinburg Police have arrested a 22-year-old male McAllen resident in connection with a deadly car accident on September 9. According to authorities, they responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Trenton Road and Closner Boulevard at around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
Officers discovered that a white Chevrolet Silverado had collided with a white BMW passenger vehicle in the intersection, according to a news release. Officers determined that the Silverado driver failed to stop at a red light, striking the BMW.
Both the female driver and male passenger from the BMW were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. The female succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
The Silverado driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, and a warrant was issued and used to recover a blood sample. The collision remains under investigation.
The Alamo Accident
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a 31-year-old Donna resident died in an accident possibly related to drunk driving at around 11 p.m. on September 9. The accident occurred south of Alamo on Military Road west of Valley View Road.
Prior to the crash, the 31-year-old man was traveling west on Military Road in a black 2004 GMC Envoy. The driver failed to drive in a single lane, veering into a side skid as he approached a curve. The vehicle skidded across the street and into a ditch where it struck a drainage pipe. The collision sent the Envoy airborne before it finally came to rest on its top in a field near the roadway.
At the time of the crash, the driver was the only occupant of the Envoy. He died of his injuries on the scene.
According to authorities, beer bottles were found at the crash site and the vehicle smelled strongly of alcohol. The incident remains under investigation.
The Facts About Texas Drunk Driving Accidents
As we’ve reported before, drunk driving accidents are more than four times as deadly as the average Texas car accident. Unsurprisingly, cities see the highest number of drunk driving accidents with Houston’s Harris County seeing nearly a thousand more drunk driving accidents than the county with the second-highest number of DUI accidents, Dallas County.
Also as expected, drunk driving accidents tend to occur more during certain hours of the day, with the most deadly DUI accidents seen between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. In fact, that time period saw 42% more deadly drunk driving accidents than the period with the second-highest rate of fatal DUI accidents, 1 a.m. to 2 a.m.
As you can see, cities and night hours tend to experience the highest rate of fatal drunk driving accidents. As a Texas driver, take care to never drive drunk and watch out for erratic drivers in peak drunk driving zones.
