The Rise in Vehicle Attacks
The rise in attacks on crowds by drivers actually started all the way back in 2020. At that time, the country saw a rise in protests, and many of those protests were then attacked by extremists in vehicles. In fact, according to reporting from National Public Radio, 50 separate vehicle-ramming incidents happened across roughly a month-long period in June of 2020.
While protesting has fallen from its 2020 peak, vehicle ramming incidents are still happening. Earlier this year, Texas itself saw one of the deadliest such events in the country. In May, a driver slammed into a crowd of people waiting for a bus outside a migrant center in Brownsville. Eight people were killed in that event with nearly a dozen more injured.
Police are not always able to determine the cause of these types of accidents. While some attackers will admit that they acted intentionally, others may not, and it can be difficult to prove that an attack was deliberate. In cases where intent is present, political and religious extremism is often a factor.
Still, some cases in which cars run into crowds are accidental. You can do your part as a driver to reduce the likelihood that an accident will occur by always driving slowly and carefully when crowds are nearby, avoiding driving under the influence, and following all road signs and traffic directors.
