What To Do If You’re Involved in a Hit-and-Run Accident

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a hit-and-run crash happened every 43 seconds in the U.S. in 2015. That year was part of a general upward trend in car accidents, meaning hit-and-runs likely occur even more frequently now. In fact, in Texas, hit-and-runs went up by roughly 90% from 2012 through 2021. All this goes to show that it’s never been more important to know what to do in case of a hit-and-run accident.

If you’re ever involved in a hit-and-run crash, you can follow the steps below:

  1. If you’re in a vehicle, stay inside.
  2. If the car is on fire, leave while watching for traffic.
  3. Check for injuries: apply pressure to wounds and avoid moving the injured unless they’re in the way of traffic.
  4. Call 911 or ask someone else to call for you.
  5. If it is safe to do so, exit your vehicle and move as far away from traffic as possible.
  6. Seek emergency medical attention. Ask for help with the steps below.
  7. Write down everything you can remember about the driver and vehicle, including the make, model, color, and license plate number.
  8. Take pictures of the scene and relevant damage.
  9. Give all relevant information to authorities.

It can be difficult to get justice following a hit-and-run accident, but following the steps above can help. The evidence you provide to the authorities can be essential to identifying and locating the hit-and-run driver.
